Navigating Your Specialist Referral: A Patient Guide

Why You Need a GP Referral?

To consult with specialist psychiatrist Dr. Joe Chen and claim a Medicare rebate for your appointments, Australian health regulations require a valid referral from a General Practitioner (GP). Most patients obtain this referral during a single routine GP visit.

What to Ask My GP to get an ADHD Referral

When speaking with your doctor, ask directly for a psychiatric assessment referral addressed to Dr. Joe Chen or the clinic. If seeking an ADHD evaluation, ask your GP to explicitly request an ADHD Assessment and specify MBS Item 291 (for assessment and management planning) in their letter. To ensure your intake is processed efficiently, your GP will include your:

  • Clinical Summary: Presenting symptoms, duration, and relevant cardiovascular history.

  • Developmental History: Childhood background, historical notes, or school reports (if available).

  • Current Management: Current medications and physical health background.

Understanding Care Roles & Victorian Regulations

While GPs handle general health and psychologists deliver psychological therapy, psychiatrists are medical doctors specialising in complex diagnostic assessments and prescribing medical treatments. Under Victorian shared care guidelines, an initial specialist psychiatric assessment establishes your formal diagnosis and treatment plan, which can then be co-managed alongside your regular GP for ongoing care.

Referral Validity & Finding a Doctor

  • Validity Period: Standard GP referrals remain valid for 12 months from your first specialist appointment, unless your GP marks the referral as "indefinite."

  • No Regular GP? You can book an appointment with any standard community clinic, local medical center, or licensed telehealth GP service across Victoria to request a referral letter.

What Happens After You Refer

Once your referral is submitted via secure messaging or email, our practice team acknowledges receipt within 24 to 48 hours. We review the referral details to ensure clinical alignment and contact you directly to discuss appointment availability and onboarding steps.
