Dr Joe Chen is an Australian trained general adult psychiatrist.

 

Dr Chen completed a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Queensland in 2010. He began his specialist psychiatric training at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane in 2012. Dr Chen continued his psychiatric training through the Monash Health and St Vincent’s Health networks in Melbourne.
 

Dr Chen then worked in metro and regional settings across Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia. On completion of his advanced training, with extensive experience in emergency psychiatry, Dr Chen obtained his FRANZCP in 2019.

 

Dr Chen attained a Master in Psychiatry at University of Melbourne and studied Leadership and Policy in Mental Health at University of Sydney. Beyond clinical practice, he has served as the Director of Psychiatry Training at Peninsula Health and has held consultant psychiatrist roles at Alfred Health and Headspace.

 

Dr Chen now focuses on providing care to his patients in private practice.

Considered the heart of the discipline of psychiatry, as a general adult psychiatrist, Dr Chen is specialised in providing evidence-based assessment, diagnosis and treatment for conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia and trauma-informed presentations.

ADHD & Neurodiversity

Expert assessment and management of ADHD, providing tailored strategies for neurodivergent individuals to navigate through the challenges of daily life, work and relationships.

Mood & Anxiety Disorders

Clinical diagnosis and intervention for depression, bipolar disorder, and various anxiety presentations to minimise severity of symptoms, restore level of functioning and self-confidence.

Trauma & Recovery

Compassionate approach for those living with traumatic experiences, focusing on empathy, safety and evidence-based therapeutic recovery.

Psychotic Symptoms

Individualised management of psychotic symptoms aimed at reducing symptoms, building capacity and independence, supported by Dr Chen’s research on managing medication side effects.

In-Person Consultations

Face-to-face consultations are conducted at Queens Road Narrm in South Melbourne. This provides a traditional in-person consultation in a calming environment, designed for nuance and connection and located centrally for those seeking a bespoke and private consultation.

Telehealth Consultations

Dr Chen offers flexible access to care via secure online consultations, which ensures high-quality psychiatric support is available regardless of your location. This telehealth pathway allows for comprehensive assessment and treatment to be accessed from the privacy and ease of your own space.

Approach to Care

Dr Joe Chen is an experienced psychiatrist whom patients and colleagues respect for his compassion and clinical acumen.

He is known for his calm demeanour and genuine attempt to listen and understand his patients. He treats his patients and their support person with respect and professionalism.

Dr Chen takes the steps and time necessary to guide patients through their journey, at their own pace.

To him, each patient is unique and there is no textbook, cookie-cutter approach. Dr Chen believes in ongoing professional development to ensure his approach is relevant, evidence-based and cutting-edge.

Above all else, Dr Chen acknowledges that patients entrust their health under his care. He approaches his work with humility.
